    As a bassist for 60 years his sense of music lines never interfere with a simple melody but is always an enigma to wonder how he does it with such a cumin and fearlessness. Thank you Neil’s for giving us MUSIC.

    With every recording I hear of NHOP I realise he's without a doubt the finest, most lyrical jazz bass player ever. I wish I had seen him before he passed.

    A virtuoso on the bass. Even Oscar listens in awe.

    Portrait of Tracy at 2:29? Asides from a perfect technique, intonation he is humble enough to take interest in modern electric players and be influence by it. I just love this man.

    In Oslo, with Karin Krogh, in a place when Club 7 was out of place, in a basement somewhere. way back.I remember Karin asked Henning, what key? You sing and I play. Niels Henning was and is still the best.

      He had to. Few people know this, but NHOP held Jaco in VERY high regard. And if anyone is ever going to do it justice on an upright, it really should be NHOP. But that's just my 2 cents. :)

    Bass 'player.'
    'Bassist.'
    Neither terms are adequate. NHOP is a human that a sentient & conscious double-bass had acquired in order to express itself to the human community. NHOP is the one able to express it.

    What you say is all true, I think. Yet I prefer older bass players such as Percy Heath, Ray Brown and Charlie Haden. More grounded, down to earth. But NHOP was astonishing, I'll grant you that.

    HI there
    Yes, we can only offer our own opinion. NHOP is arguably the best well founded player technically and theoretically. Doesn't mean to say that all other bass players are not fantastic. My own favourite (I have played the bass for nearly 40 years) is Pastorius, who can still make me cry. But I do respect NHOP's quality.

    Oh, I realize it far too well!..But I don't think that's the case here at all,the best leaders are looking for the best sidemen they can find. And in most cases they've found people attuned to their music at home. Niels has established himself as an excellent sideman, ready to accompany anybody who hires him, but he hasn't shown commitment to any leader in particular except O.P. He also was concentrating on his virtuoso skills as a soloist and moving further away from group/time playing.

  • @vova47
    @vova47 11 лет назад +3

    Not sure what you mean by "technically and theoretically". To claim that someone is "best at everything" always seems a bit presumptuous to me.Do you claim to have heard every bassist in Jazz including those playing now?
    I do respect many NHOP qualities, but when it comes to my favorite bassists to listen to he simply isn't my first choice. And he obviously wasn't first choice for Miles, Coltrane, Bill Evans,Sonny Rollins and other important artists who made the Jazz History what it is today.
